To quote her mom, “yes, she is ready to roll!” Logan Hahn is an 8-year-old second grade young lady who lives in West Fargo, ND with her mom and dad, Nicole and Chris, and her sister, Aftyn. When you meet Logan, she may try to fool you with her quiet, almost shy demeanor. But once she is more comfortable in her environment, she displays a joyful, enthusiastic side that is shared by her family.
Logan was born in Greeley, Colorado and was diagnosed through newborn screening at 28 days of life. Even though her parents were taught how to administer treatments including nebulizers, Logan wasn’t very happy with the new requirements placed on her. The same personality traits that contribute to her vitality today featured a resistance to cooperation as a newly diagnosed infant. However, at 15 months she was introduced to the VEST® and her level of cooperation improved dramatically.
As many parents of children with CF know, a solution to one problem doesn’t equate to all problems being solved. Logan’s CF mutation led to sleep apnea and serious sinus issues at age 2. Full sinus surgery including removal of tonsils and adenoids followed with very positive results. Chris and Nikki have been very conscientious regarding Logan’s self-care. Logan has learned to rinse her sinuses twice daily so that when she visits the ENT cystic fibrosis specialist at the University of Minnesota, she knows she has done everything she should to help ensure a positive report.
Logan is fortunate to have been allowed to participate in a clinical trial for Kalydeco® last year. Since starting Kalydeco, her lung function has improved, her energy is up, as is her overall health. Her mom and dad are firm in their belief that better nutrition, exercise and ensuring that medications are taken properly makes a big difference in Logan’s quality of life. She can even be heard telling her friends to “eat a rainbow of foods or you won’t be healthy like me.”
With summer ending, Logan’s favorite pastimes of swimming at the lake and horseback riding with her “Nana” are also winding down. That’s okay though because she is spending her days attending 2nd Grade at Central Cass Schools in West Fargo. And besides, her love of drawing can be done during summer or winter. In fact, Nikki tells me she can draw with a steady hand even while shaking in her VEST.
Thank you Logan for agreeing to be CFA’s Ambassador for 2013-2014 and for being a good example to others.
